The Ascension Advantage in Athletics: Developing Skills, Character, and Opportunities for Every Student
Ascension Episcopal School
At Ascension Episcopal School, athletics is a vital component of developing well-rounded, resilient, and engaged young adults. The Ascension Advantage is a multifaceted approach to athletics that ensures every student has the opportunity to experience the benefits of sports from an early age, with a supportive path that grows with them through each stage of their education.
Starting Strong: Athletics for All in Middle School
One of the unique aspects of Ascension’s athletic program is our commitment to inclusion and skill-building from the very beginning. Starting in 5th grade, Ascension students are encouraged to explore and participate in a variety of sports, regardless of their experience level. “Our focus is on skill development, teamwork, and fostering a love for competition. Everyone has a chance to play, helping to build their athletic skills early on,” says Daniel Gautreaux, Ascension’s Assistant Athletic Director.
Greater Opportunities in Upper School
While in many larger schools, students often have to wait until their junior or senior years to secure spots on varsity teams or gain significant playing time, Ascension students have the chance to participate and even take on leadership roles much earlier. This early exposure to competitive play strengthens their abilities and fosters a deep sense of confidence. Upper school athletics at Ascension is designed not just for the elite athlete but for any student who wants to push themselves and compete.
Encouraging Multi-Sport Participation
Ascension is committed to the philosophy that students should not be limited to a single sport. We encourage and support multi-sport participation, allowing students to build a diverse athletic skill set that strengthens their overall physical abilities and reduces the risk of overuse injuries often seen in single-sport specialization. Playing multiple sports offers students the chance to expand their skills, discover new interests, and avoid burnout. They also gain a competitive edge, as skills developed in one sport often complement and enhance performance in another.
A Place for Every Athlete
The Ascension coaches ensure that every student, regardless of skill level or experience, has a place in our athletic program. By providing early opportunities in middle school, ample playtime in upper school, and the flexibility to participate in multiple sports, Ascension Episcopal School fosters an inclusive, supportive environment where students grow as athletes and individuals. At Ascension, every student is valued and truly has the chance to shine.
The Episcopal Church of the Ascension School (Ascension Episcopal School) admits qualified students without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin. We are a welcoming community.
