The Upper School Gators for Others team organized a service day in September, during which students volunteered in the community. Based on their talents and interests, students chose between three organizations to serve.
Under the leadership of Ella Pool and Ava Bourgeois, students who volunteered at the Lafayette Animal Shelter had the opportunity to learn about the organization's mission and tour the facility. Some students observed procedures such as rabies shots and neutering, while others interacted with the animals by walking and washing the dogs or playing with the kittens. During their time at the shelter, students were thrilled to witness a dog named Uno getting adopted and finding a new forever family. “It was such a heartwarming experience!” said Martha Odom.
Students led by Mary Frances Durio and Amelia Cleveland at the Desormeaux Foundation packaged baby bottles for new mothers to be delivered to Catholic churches in the upcoming months. They were able to package over 1,000 bottles, exceeding their expectations and actually running out of bottles.
At Second Harvest Food Bank, students, under the guidance of Molly Cormier and Andre Abshire, packed frozen meals and produce, sorted through food donations, and prepared over 600 meals in boxes. “It was so satisfying to organize and box so many meals for those in need!” said Ben Blanco.
The Gators for Others program provides quarterly service day opportunities to upper school students, offering valuable personal growth and development experiences while improving the community. Through engaging in service, students not only gain practical skills but also learn the importance of empathy, responsibility, and active citizenship, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of their community's needs.
The Episcopal Church of the Ascension School (Ascension Episcopal School) admits qualified students without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin. We are a welcoming community.
