Dr. Tim Elmore Speaks with Ascension Parents and Faculty

Ascension Episcopal School
Thanks to our amazing PTO, Ascension had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Tim Elmore, founder of Growing Leaders, to share his knowledge on parenting and education with the Ascension community. Leading this next generation of children requires a fresh perspective, which is just what Dr. Elmore provided.

Dr. Elmore spoke with parents on parenting strategies for leading Generation Z. Generation Z, those born since 2001, have grown up in a world with smartphones and social media, mass shootings and rising anxiety levels, recessions, and even a pandemic. These have all shaped their reality. Using the advice from his book, "Generation Z Unfiltered," Dr. Elmore encouraged parents to do some “self-surgery” on their leadership at home if it is needed and spoke about the three most common mistakes parents make in this generation.
  1. We Risk Too Little
  2. We Rescue Too Quickly
  3. We Rave and Reward Too Easily

Before launching into practical tips, he concluded by summarizing with this thought, “Let’s prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child. We must lead our kids based on facts not fear, principles not panic, and wisdom not worry.” The practical tips he shared next were all based on his leadership visuals, Habitudes

And if that wasn’t enough, Dr. Elmore then visited with our faculty and validated many of the educational pedagogy our school already demonstrates. In his presentation titled, “Marching Off the Map: Inspire Students to Navigate a Brand New World,” he shared his four best practices for schools, which included the need for social-emotional learning, professional development, timeless leadership principles, and healthy parent engagement.

Afterward, he explained how to connect with a generation that values experiential learning and participation.  Nowadays, education is not about lecturing and giving information to students, but about educators helping them make sense of everything that comes their way. Additionally, he shared applicable Habitudes.

Whether you are a parent or an educator, leading children emotionally and spiritually is at the core. Together, parents and educators can support their children's success by bringing leadership qualities to life through intentional practices that acknowledge the differences of this generation.
